Ben Scherbeijn (born Aardenburg, 8 november 1949, Holland).

Artist statement: I like nature, stillness and the Inner Self. They are my sources of inspiration for life as for painting. In drawings, etchings and paintings I'm trying to catch some of it and bringing it further. So I like it when coincidences and surprises happen in my work(s). Furthermore I like the smell of oils and mediums and the thickness of paint with sand and/or other materials.
As an artist I'm living and working in the villages of Cadzand and Oostburg, Sluis, Zeeland, Nederland.
Painter's education: former teachers: Constant Zegwaart, Ernst Blok and Johnny Beerens.
Now studying at The Academie of Fine Arts at Eeklo (Belgium)
(painting, I'm in my fourth year; teachers: Nico de Guchtenaere and Frederik van Dijck), I am
also very much autodidact; self-learnig, self-studying and self-developing).
Let the paint do the job........... not the teacher.
My life is very much influenced by the fact that I fell out of a tree, halfway my life. That fall made me since then user of a wheelchair. It gave me lots of inspiration, but also lots of transpiration. Let me only point to the fact that many schools, musea, galeries and ateliers/workshops are not accessible for me and my wheelchair. I'm not to sad about it, but it would help me a lot if more institutions were [literaly and also figurative ] more accessible.
My works of art are mostly paintings in oils and acrylics with some other materials in it, like sand, coffee, ground, pebbles, gypsum, plumbum and founded objects. The paint is mostly very thick, but sometimes I paint portraits with very dilluted paint.
The paintings are figurative with some abstractions. The titles can help you further into the works.
Inspiration comes from nature, ZEN-meditation, stilness, and the Inner Self.
Heroes on painting are: Anselm Kiefer, Lucian Freud and Luc Tuymans. Anselm Kiefer for his materials, his way of painting with them and of course for his approach of the difficult questions of Germany after 1945. Lucian Freud for the beautiful portraits, naked to the soul, and the way he treats his paint layer for layer. And Tuymans for the quietness and emptiness of his works of art.
